"THINGS WERE MUCH BETTER IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

I'm sure you heard this saying quite a few times, and I often use the phrase myself; However
in some instances, things were not better in the past.
Several areas that the phrase applies to will be presented.

Technology

This area seems obvious, however countless (old) people seem to think things somehow worked better in the past. Since manufacturers of a products sold his/her merchandise locally, it was produced inefficiently and not at a competitive / fair price and generally, things may have been worse than today.
For this reason the framing and structure of a product was more durable, but its components and functionality was vastly limited. Ex:
PRODUCT
FLAW
Boats Heavy, unsafe, weak hulls.
Houses No/few insulation, lead paint, few matched industry minimum standards.
Cars Every aspect of the automobile has been improved for the better.
I understand when an older person feels an older product is better, only if they are basing it on their emotional attachment to it and not its efficiency and superior function. For example a 1945 Chrysler may remind him of a  (woman) date he drove around, however to extend the cars' value by saying it is better than a newer car is totally false and shows a lack of the basic understanding of progress.

However craftsmanship has detoriated throughout the centuries, as our society has moved more towards information based occupations. The number of tradesman has declined (as a % to the population). Woodworking, paintings, family farms were better in the past.

FAMILY VALUES & SOCIETY

The same things that seems to occur more in the modern society has been around in the good old days too, such as: It simply seems these events are occurring more frequently now than then because the media helps to inform the everyone in the community and throughout the world, when something happen (global village).

If a woman is raped in a town, the information on the crime (eg.60 yrs ago) will likely remain in the town, consequently isolating neighboring communities to the frequency and nature of the crime occurring throughout their life.

To have the knowledge required to function effectively in the workplace was easy to obtain. Because technology progressed little (in the past) ,- a worker did not need to know anything about computers, global competition, accounting practices, interpersonal skills and a understanding of social issues-; A person could have a well paying  job he/she likes with only a high school education. This is evident when looking at the current Forbes Magazines' top companies. Few of the older CEO's do not have any formal education, yet they continue to be given the opportunity to run multi-million dollar companies. What is known as dinosaurs from the past.

Marriages lasted longer in the past because of the oppressive control the husband had over his wife. She was discriminated against by the government (not allowed to vote), and the churches, the general population and evern other women. She was not given the opportunity of educate herself ('get yourself married fast little girl') nor having a job. Her lack of job skills makes it impossible for her to financially support herself and consequently becomes dependent on her husband. Womens rights were nonexistent.

She could easily live with her husband for 50 years (or as long as he wishes), without having the freedom of being independent. The religion she belongs to preaching 'stay with your family and a good wife always looks after her husband', did not help the situation.

Marriages are now shorter because most of these limitations are removed for the modern woman. Those long lasting marriages in the good old days would have a comparable divorce rate to todays figures if those women had the opportunity to provide an income for themselves.

The issue is not that marriages are more unstable not, but it ultimately boils down to staying together because of love, and not financial/social/religious pressures that played a greater role in the past.

In reference to the good old days when the French/British/Dutch sailed the seven sees and found new land; It has been proven that the Chinese have explored the entire word hundreds of years before the travels of the Europeans occured. The travels of the Chinese are not fully acknowledged because they did not leave a lasting impression on the land. They simply did not travel to extract the resources of the land and consequently they left few traces of at the places they visited.

I was in the hospital with someone lately when I overheard two older couples telling about the past. The dialog was as follows. And yes, I rememered it word-for-word.

Old man 1: "Me and my wife have been married for 45 years, how about you?"
Old man 2: "52 years here"
Old man 1: "These people now-a-days marry and divorce more than I change cars"
Old man2: "Yeah, I saw on T.V this actress who married two men within one year"
Old man1:"Things sure were not like they used to be"
Wife of 1: "Yes"
Old man2: "I remember the first Ford I bought, was it ever a beauty, I used to crank it
from the front to start it, you really needed a strong arm to get it going" Old man1:"I remember those.... boy that was a beauty, wish I had one now"
Wife of 1: "Yeah"
Old man 1:"Me and my wife drive all over the Country, almost every day we're out, our
neighbors are always fascinated where we go, we usually to to different malls, friends places and events"

The dialog kept going, but you get the idea.

This relates to being an effective worker and basically knowing how things occur.
Understanding something through experiences only compensates for a lack of knowledge in that area. This applies to the technical field, and jobs with procedures. Interpersonal skills do take time to improve and experience only in this ares is warrented.

A department manager may be working at his job for 15 years and progressively become a better manager; However, his/her ineffective management style 15 years ago was attributed to a lack of formal education , that teaches all the aspects of being a manager (and more) that took him/her 15 years to grasp.
One can learn through the trial and error method of experience or attend formal education to understant
processes that have been tested and proven to work effectively in that society.

So when someone says 'do you have any experience in this area', it usually is coming from an older person who him/herself learned through experience (lack of education in that field) and strongly believes no one can possibly gain the same knowledge through schooling.

These people may prosper in non-technical fields of study (management, human resources..) but they cannot fake knowing anything on a technical job. Such as an engineer, computer programmer, chemist,
accounting...

Doing the same task for 12 years simple means one knows how to function at that task. He/she still lacks the understanding and knowledge to progress and efficiently perform other tasks
